One-act plays were hugely popular as curtain-raisers in the Victorian age and during the early years of the 20th century. But they went out of fashion. They were vehicles for himself and his leading lady, Gertrude Lawrence, giving them a variety of roles to play, and also a chance to sing and dance.

The plays are about the annoyances of dating, and they take things to a certain extreme. That’s where the comedy is.

The structure of the show is one of the treats. Running before and after four one-act plays are fives scenes from “Check Please,” by Jonathan Rand. The gag is that on one side of the stage, a “girl” is having a bizarre date, and on the other side of the stage, a “guy” is having bizarre date.
