Virtual audits using Google Street View are an increasingly popular method of assessing neighborhood environments for health and urban planning research. However, the validity of these studies may be threatened by issues of image availability, image age, and variance of image age, particularly in the Global South. This study identifies patterns of Street View image availability, image age, and image age variance across cities in Latin America and assesses relationships between these measures and measures of resident socioeconomic conditions.
At the subcity level, mixed-effect linear and logistic models were used to assess relationships between measures of socioeconomic conditions and image availability, average image age, and the standard deviation of image age. Street View imagery was available at , points All three assessed threats to the validity of Street View virtual audit studies spatially covary with measures of socioeconomic conditions in Latin American cities. Researchers should be attentive to these issues when using Street View imagery.
Google Street View, a Google Maps service released in , offers freely available georeferenced panoramic imagery captured at the street level [ 1 ]. Since its release, researchers studying the effects of neighborhood environments on health have begun using Street View imagery as a data source. A recent systematic review identified at least 54 studies using virtual audits in health research, most of which rely on Google Street View imagery [ 2 ].
Studies that compare data obtained from virtual audits in Google Street View to data from in-person audits generally find good concordance between the two techniques [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ], although virtual auditing does not seem to work well for certain instruments [ 9 , 10 ]. This suggests that virtual audits are not a good substitution for in-person audits in all cases.

And every week, more than 5 million active apps and websites leverage the core products of Google Maps Platform. People rely on Google Maps and Google Maps Platform to not just get from point A to B, but to run businesses, to order food, to hail a cab, or to even provide SOS alerts during emergencies. With so many critical applications depending on Google Maps for accuracy and seamlessness, wondering how frequently does Google update its Maps data is quite reasonable.
Well, the basic thing to understand is that there are two key components to mapmaking: data and imagery. Data: Google Maps use data from more than 1, authoritative sources around the world. Overhead imagery gives Google details of roads and buildings, while street-level imagery provides road names, road signs, building numbers, and business names. To manage the vast amounts of incoming data, machine learning libraries and frameworks are used.
By using machine learning-based approaches, Google is now able to map as many buildings in one year as it previously used to map in 10 years!

Recently, Google Street View GSV has been examined as a tool for remotely conducting systematic observation of the built environment. Studies have found it offers benefits over in-person audits, including efficiency, safety, cost, and the potential to expand built environment research to larger areas and more places globally. However, one limitation has been the lack of documentation on the date of imagery collection. In , Google began placing a date stamp on images which now enables investigation of this concern.
This study questions the spatio-temporal stability in the GSV date stamp. Specifically, is the imagery collected contemporaneously? If not, how frequently and where is imagery from different time periods woven together to represent environmental conditions in a particular place. Furthermore, how much continuity exists in imagery for a particular time period? Answering these questions will provide guidance on the use of GSV as a tool for built environment audits.
Every street segment in the site was coded by the date the imagery for that segment was collected. Spatial query and descriptive statistics were applied to understand the spatio-temporal patterns of imagery dates.
